FAQ – Global Talent Visa for Tech Applicants
Exceptional Talent is for established design leaders with at least 5 years of professional experience, while Exceptional Promise is for emerging designers with less than 5 years of experience. The categories also differ in the level of recognition required, particularly internationally, with a significantly higher bar for Exceptional Talent.
It depends on your category: for Exceptional Promise, evidence from one country is enough, while Exceptional Talent requires recognition in at least two countries. For example, Talent applicants must have won at least one international design award, while Promise applicants can use national awards, and a nomination or shortlisting is enough.
Yes. Awards are just one of three criteria, and you only need to meet two of them, so you can apply with media recognition and evidence of exhibitions, publications or commercial distribution of your work instead. If your work is strong but not yet recognised, you can build that recognition first to strengthen your application.
Applicants endorsed under the Talent route are eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 3 years, while applicants endorsed under the Promise route become eligible after 5 years. Talent applicants may be eligible to apply for British citizenship after 5 years in the UK, while Promise applicants are typically eligible after 6 years.
UX/UI and digital design, fashion, architecture and gallery-focused design are assessed by other endorsing bodies, and student projects or taking part in residencies or workshops don’t count.
Example: designers who work mainly in a Visual Arts context (work created for exhibition) apply through Arts Council England’s Visual Arts route. The Design route, assessed by the Design Business Association (DBA), is for commercial designers.

No. Digital and UX/UI design remain within Tech Nation’s remit, so these designers apply through the Global Talent for tech talents route.
A standard set of three things:
- A CV. There is no page limit, but keep it concise.
- Three letters of recommendation. Two must come from well-established, nationally or internationally recognised design organisations, with at least one based in the UK. The third can be from another recognised organisation or from an eminent individual.
- Up to 10 pieces of supporting evidence, covering at least two of the three assessment criteria.
