Tech Nation Visa guide analysis
Which roles are not eligible for the UK Global Talent visa?
This article explains which roles are not eligible under the UK Global Talent visa route and clarifies common misconceptions about endorsement criteria. Employers and applicants should carefully assess eligibility before submitting an application.
Not Eligible Roles for the UK Global Talent Visa
Before applying for the UK Global Talent Visa, it is essential to assess whether your role meets the official eligibility criteria under the Tech Nation (Global Talent – Digital Technology) guidance.
Global Talent visa (administered by Tech Nation) is designed for individuals who are recognised leaders or emerging leaders in digital technology. However, not all technical or business roles qualify.

Eligible Roles Under the Digital Technology Route:

The Tech Nation guidance identifies more than 25 technical and business skills that may qualify for endorsement.
Common examples include:
  • DevOps and SysOps engineers
  • Principal software engineers and senior developers
  • Experienced data scientists and data engineers
  • AI and machine learning specialists
  • Experienced UX/UI designers
  • Experienced back end developers
  • Solution sales experts
  • Experienced Product Manager
  • SaaS or enterprise sales leadership for digital services
  • Experience as C Suite in a SMEs + (CEO, CMO, CIO) or head of operations for a digital business
And other roles, full list of the eligible roles check in the Tech Nation Guide
If your role aligns clearly with these skills, you may be eligible - subject to meeting the evidence requirements.

The relevant experience must have been gained within a Product-Led Digital Technology Company (PLDTC). According to the Tech Nation guidance, “product-led digital technology companies” are defined as:

"businesses that provide a proprietary digital technical service, product, platform or hardware as their primary source of revenue. The creation of software, the processing or storage of data, or the development and application of technical computing hardware is often central to their business model".

This distinction is critical when assessing eligibility.

Roles Generally Not Eligible for the UK Global Talent Visa:

Certain roles are frequently refused because they do not meet the core criteria of the route. These typically include:
  • Technology consultancy roles
  • Corporate roles in companies that are not product-led digital technology companies (PLDTCs)
  • Business or operational roles focused primarily on internal functions (e.g. project management, HR, PR, general operations)

Why Some Roles Are Considered Ineligible:

A key reason is the evidence requirement and ability to influence product development processes or core business process.
Approximately 50% of the mandatory and optional criteria require applicants to demonstrate measurable impact within a product-led digital technology company. This impact must relate to:
  • Development of innovative digital products or features
  • Technical contribution to a product
  • Demonstrable business growth driven by digital innovation
Consultants, outsourcing specialists, or professionals in purely corporate roles often struggle to provide this type of evidence, particularly if they are not directly embedded within a product-focused team.

Exceptions to the “Not Eligible” Rule

There are important nuances in the guidance.
  • Consulting and agencies focused on product innovation: If you work in a consultancy that is deeply focused on product innovation in a specific technology sector and is recognised for its industry impact, your experience may still qualify - provided you can evidence measurable contribution.
  • Technical Roles in Non-PLDTC Organisations: Tech Nation guidance confirms that technical applicants working in non-digital or non-product-led companies may still be eligible, as long as:
  1. Their role is genuinely technical (example - a software developer working at the bank); and
  2. They can demonstrate innovation, impact, and sector recognition.
The employer’s structure alone does not automatically determine eligibility - the nature of the work does.

How to Assess Whether Your Role Is Eligible:

To determine eligibility under the UK Global Talent Visa (Digital Technology route):
  1. Review the official Tech Nation guidance.
  2. Match your responsibilities against the listed technical skills.
  3. Assess whether you can demonstrate measurable impact using objective metrics (growth, product adoption, innovation outcomes).
  4. Evaluate whether your work shows sector-wide recognition rather than internal company performance only.
A professional eligibility assessment before submission significantly reduces the risk of refusal.
