Since 1 July 2026, designers have had their own Global Talent route to the UK. The organisation responsible for endorsements is the Design Business Association (DBA), acting on behalf of Arts Council England.

In our previous article, we explained who is eligible and which documents are required.

One of the key steps to maximising your chances of success is choosing the right category: Exceptional Talent or Exceptional Promise.

In this article, we walk you through both categories and explain the practical differences between Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise.

This choice is not a formality. It determines the level of evidence required, the number of countries from which your recognition must come, and how quickly you can settle in the UK.
📌 What both categories have in common

For both categories, applicants must prepare a standard set of documents, which includes:

  • A CV covering the applicant’s professional career and education;
  • Three letters of support that must meet specific formal requirements, with each letter no longer than three sides of A4.
  • Two letters must come from established design organisations with a recognised reputation in the design field; and
  • At least one of these organisations must be based in the UK;
  • The third letter can be provided either by an eminent individual or by another reputable organisation.
  • Up to 10 pieces of evidence, each no longer than two sides of A4, demonstrating how the applicant meets the relevant criteria. This may include media recognition, awards, and professional appearances;
  • Applicants must meet at least two criteria.
The route covers commercial design disciplines such as graphic, brand, motion, product, industrial, furniture, commercial interior, service, and strategic design. It excludes UX/UI and digital design, which are assessed under the Tech Nation Global Talent pathway.

What distinguishes Exceptional Talent from Exceptional Promise is not the paperwork itself, but what that evidence needs to demonstrate.

🏆 Exeptional Talent: already a leader

Exceptional Talent is designed for established designers who have already demonstrated significant professional achievement and international recognition.

The formal criteria require applicants to have at least five years of experience in their field and to have gained recognition not only in their home country but also internationally.

The key word is international.

For specific criteria, such as media recognition, awards, and professional appearances, the guidance sets out the following requirements:

  • Media recognition: Evidence, such as critical reviews by named design critics, must come from at least two countries.
  • Awards: Applicants must have won at least one international award for excellence in design. Examples include the Red Dot Award, iF Design Award, a D&AD Pencil, the Pentawards, Cannes Lions, or the Transform Awards. Grants, bursaries, and scholarships do not qualify.
  • Professional appearances, exhibitions, publications, or distribution: Applicants must provide evidence of professionally significant activity with international reach, covering at least two countries.
🌱 Exceptional Promise: A Leader in the Making

Exceptional Promise is designed for designers who are at an earlier stage of their careers but have already begun to establish a track record of achievement over at least the past three years.

They must demonstrate recognition of their potential to become future leaders in their field.

Unlike Exceptional Talent, recognition from just one country is sufficient, and this can be the applicant’s country of residence. The key difference is the potential for future leadership:

For specific criteria, such as media recognition, awards, and professional appearances, the guidance sets out the following requirements:

  • Media recognition: Reviews from national or international outlets in one or more countries can qualify.
  • Awards: Applicants may qualify through an award nomination or shortlist placement; winning an award is not always necessary. Unlike Exceptional Talent, the award does not necessarily have to be international.
  • Scholarships and fellowships: A full scholarship or fellowship, such as a fully funded design degree at a recognised university or design school, may be accepted as evidence of achievement. This option is not available under Exceptional Talent.
  • Professional appearances, exhibitions, publications, or distribution: Applicants can provide evidence of professionally significant activity from one or more countries.

💡 Which one to choose? States

It is clear that the Exceptional Talent route requires evidence of an established international track record rather than local recognition or emerging potential. This difference should be reflected across all parts of the application, including the supporting evidence, CV, and letters of support.

For Exceptional Promise, the requirements are less demanding, with a greater emphasis on potential for future leadership.

Choose based on your evidence today, not on your ambitions. If your awards, press and projects already span at least two countries and include wins rather than shortlists, Talent is realistic and gets you to settlement two years sooner.

If your recognition is mostly in one country, or you have strong nominations but few wins, Promise is the safer choice.
